From post-primary shakeups to local school board debates, here’s what’s happening across Tennessee this week.
Tennessee’s political landscape continues to shift after the 7th District primaries, with new campaign maneuvers and local controversies marking a busy week across the state.
Barrett Expected to Challenge Roberts in Senate District 23
After finishing strong in the 7th Congressional District primary despite heavy outside spending, former state representative Jody Barrett is expected to announce a Republican primary challenge against Sen. Kerry Roberts in State Senate District 23. Barrett’s home counties overlap heavily with Roberts’ district, fueling speculation he will make his intentions official in early December, according to TriStar Daily.
Reeves Faces Tough Rematch in Williamson County
State Rep. Lee Reeves of Williamson County faces a difficult reelection campaign after his poor showing in this year’s congressional special election. Reeves first won his seat in 2024 with just 37.6 percent in a three-way Republican primary backed by national pro-voucher groups. He will again face Brian Beathard, who has gained quiet support from former candidate Michelle Foreman. Political observers note that Reeves’ earlier coalition has fractured, leaving him vulnerable in a one-on-one contest next August.
Riley Gaines Barker Joins Sumner Library Board
Conservative activist and former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines Barker has been appointed to the Sumner County Library Board, renewing a months-long debate over transgender and LGBTQ-themed books in local libraries. Gaines criticized the board for allowing such titles in children’s sections, arguing that it ignores state restrictions on “woke gender ideology.” County Commissioner Jeremy Mansfield confirmed the appointment and said the board will remain a nine-member body evenly split between conservative and non-conservative members.
Sumner County Schools Retain “Christmas Break”
The Sumner County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to retain “Christmas Break” on its academic calendar for the 2026–27 school year after a heated debate over inclusivity versus tradition. The term had been “Winter Break” for more than 30 years before being changed to “Christmas Break” last year. Board member Wade Evans said the process lacked public input, while Steven King argued that the name reflects community values. A compromise proposal to label it “Christmas/Winter Break” failed.
Brandon Ogles Launches Bid for Williamson County Mayor
Former state representative Brandon Ogles, cousin of Congressman Andy Ogles, has launched his campaign for Williamson County mayor, declaring that “growth is no longer progress.” Ogles is centering his bid on opposition to overdevelopment and preservation of local character while highlighting his legislative record on school safety and crime prevention. The Republican primary will be held in May 2026, with businessman Todd Kaestner already announced and County Commissioner Mary Smith expected to join the race.
Tullahoma Schools Ban Pride Flags in Classrooms
The Tullahoma City School Board voted this week to ban LGBTQ+ Pride flags from classrooms, allowing only the American and Tennessee state flags. Officials said the new policy follows similar decisions in Coffee and Tipton counties. Supporters described the move as ensuring neutrality in classrooms, while critics called it exclusionary toward LGBTQ+ students.
