New polling shows Tennessee ranks seventh in presidential approval, reinforcing why GOP candidates continue to align closely with Trump’s message.

As the federal government shutdown stretches into its third week, new polling shows Tennessee remains one of the most pro-Trump states in the country — a sign that Republican candidates across the state have little incentive to move away from President Trump’s brand heading into 2026.

According to Morning Consult’s latest three-month analysis of state-level data, 58% of Tennesseans approved of the president’s job performance in September, compared with 39% who disapproved. The result marks no change in approval since August but a one-point increase in disapproval, nudging Tennessee’s ranking from sixth to seventh nationally among states most supportive of the president.

The pattern reflects slight movement rather than meaningful erosion. Tennessee’s support for Trump remains stronger than that of most neighboring states — comparable to Alabama (58-38) and Arkansas (57-39) — and far above swing-state averages such as Georgia (48-49) and North Carolina (47-50).

Across the South and Appalachia, Trump’s approval continues to exceed 55% in West Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas, underscoring the region’s deep Republican lean even as the national mood shows signs of fatigue with Washington gridlock. Morning Consult found the president maintains net-positive approval in 24 states, up from 23 the previous month.

Nationally, RealClearPolitics’ polling average places Trump at a net approval of –6.2 points, with 53% disapproval as of late September. Despite a slight national downturn, Tennessee’s consistency underscores the state’s alignment with Trump’s policy and political style.

For Republican candidates, these numbers carry strategic implications. Campaigns in districts such as Tennessee’s 7th and 6th — both heavily Republican — are expected to continue emphasizing loyalty to Trump’s agenda, viewing his sustained popularity as a mobilizing force for conservative voters. Even in less predictable suburban areas, GOP hopefuls are framing their campaigns as an extension of the president’s message on border security, inflation, and cultural issues.

Trump’s approval in Tennessee has slipped only two points since July and remains within the 58-60% band recorded throughout the summer.

As the shutdown continues to test Washington’s political endurance, Tennessee’s support offers a clear reminder: in one of the reddest corners of the country, President Trump’s brand still defines the party’s path forward.
