Opinion: Democrats Celebrate — But Tennessee Conservatives Just Woke Up

Democratic wins in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York may energize conservatives in Tennessee’s 7th District ahead of the Dec. 2 special election.

In just 27 days, voters in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District will elect a new member of Congress. After last night’s elections — where Democrats notched major victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and even New York City — it’s easy to imagine Aftyn Behn and Tennessee Democrats feeling a jolt of confidence. But it’s also likely that Matt Van Epps and Republicans see those same results as a flashing red warning light — one that could awaken conservative voters who may have been coasting toward December 2.

Across the country, Democrats had a strong night. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli to become governor. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger became the state’s first female governor after defeating Republican Winsome Sears. And in New York City, voters went even further left, electing Zohran Mamdani — a self-described democratic socialist — as mayor. It was a night of clear victories for the Democratic Party and a show of strength for its progressive wing.

But Tennessee isn’t New Jersey, Virginia, or New York. It’s overwhelmingly pro-Trump and grounded in conservative values. The 7th District — stretching from Clarksville to Columbia and across much of rural Middle Tennessee — reflects that foundation. Whatever enthusiasm Democrats feel from last night’s wins, it’s not likely to translate to Tennessee.

If anything, the national results may prove to be the best thing that could have happened for the Van Epps campaign. Rather than demoralizing conservatives, they serve as a wake-up call. They remind Republican and pro-Trump voters that elections have consequences — and that staying home isn’t an option for those who want to keep Tennessee on a conservative course.

Van Epps has run a steady, disciplined campaign, but his biggest risk was complacency among his base. Now, that complacency may be gone. The results in other states have given conservatives a tangible reason to re-engage and show up. The message is clear: Democrats may be celebrating, but Tennessee Republicans just woke up.
